Legal Aid
Legal Aid is a service provided by the general legal profession
in Jersey under which people who cannot afford a lawyer can do
so.
If you have been charged with a criminal offence and refused
bail you should apply for Legal Aid on your first appearance.
The Police station should also have the relevant information.
If you have a legal problem whether crimial or civil and you
need an advocate you should attend the Legal Aid offices.
MAKING AN APPLICATION TO LEGAL AID
To make an application for Legal Aid you will need to
complete an application form which can be
collected from from the Legal Aid Office at Collas Crill, 40
Don Street, St Helier, JE1 4XD, or from the Citizens Advice
Bureau.
Alternatively you can access the Legal Aid
Website where there is further information and the
application form can be
downloaded.
Legal Aid is administered by the Acting Batonnier, Advocate
Dionne Gilbert.

A mutually convenient appointment will be made once you have
returned the completed application form together with any relevant
papers, in particular a charge sheet if you have been charged with
a criminal offence.If you need Legal Aid for a child, the parent
with whom the child lives should come to the appointment with
them.
If your application for Legal Aid is successful The Legal Aid
Office will write to you to advise you of the name of the law firm
which will be acting for you.
