Leaving Home
Parental responsibility ends at the age of 16, at which time you
may sign a lease to rent a property for less than 9 years (paper
lease).
You must obtain confirmation of housing qualifications from the
Housing Department. You will need to complete 'this form' and send it to:
The Population Office, PO Box 843, Jubilee
Wharf, 24 Esplanade, St Helier JE4 0UT. For general advice and
information tel 448905 or e-mail:

Housing qualifications - Methods of proving residence
-
Birth certificate if Jersey born.
-
School records. Apply to the particular school; for older
records of schools which no longer exist try the present school in
that locality. Some records appear to be no longer in existence (eg
Jersey Girls Collegiate).
-
Evidence from landlords.
-
Records of employers. Apply direct to them.
-
Letters from friends or relatives are not acceptable, references
provided by doctors or other professional contacts are only
acceptable when applicants have attended on a very regular basis,
eg monthly.
-
If absent whilst still living at home (ie at boarding school or
as a student elsewhere than Jersey), then regarded as living here
if the parents were resident in Jersey.
-
Social Security records. Write to the Contributions Section
giving full name, address, date of birth and date first registered.
They can provide confirmation of the first date registered. (They
cannot provide record of employment). They will reply in one or two
weeks.
-
If resident before Social Security
records started (? about 1961) then rate and electoral lists can be
used. These are available at parish halls. (Some are also available
at the Jersey Library and the library of the Societe
Jersiaise.)
