Meningitis
Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining surrounding the
brain (the meninges). There are two different types, viral and
bacterial and symptoms can vary, but in adults and other children
may include:
- high temperature
- vomiting and sometimes diarrhoea
- severe headache
- neck stiffness (inability to touch chin to chest)
- dislike of bright lights
- joint or muscle pain
- fits
- feeling confused or disorientated
- a rash which does not fade when a clear drinking glass is
pressed against it.
Most at risk are the under 5's, the 14-25's and the over 55's.
Of course people of other ages can get it too.
If you suspect that someone has meningitis, seek medical help
immediately.
If your doctor is not available then go straight to the Accident
& Emergency Department.
