Training Programmes

Advance to Work

If you are 16 - 19 years of age, out of work, and finding it hard to get a job or need more experience under your belt to work out what you really want to do, the answer is 'yes'.

As an ATW trainee, you will gain?

  • a personal mentor to support you throughout your time on the scheme
  • meaningful work experience in an area that interests you
  • skills and training relevant to the job market and your individual needs
  • a strengthened CV
  • the chance to forge a valuable relationship with an employer
  • motivation and focus by having a productive daily routine

 

You won't be paid a wage during your time on the scheme but you may be eligible to receive Income Support through the Social Security Department. Your mentor will discuss the details of this during your interview.

What type of training will I receive?

Training is an integral part of Advance to Work, delivered by a range of training providers. Mentors arrange appropriate training tailored to each individual's needs. Advance to Work is extensive and includes:

  • mock interviews and CV advice
  • numeracy and literacy
  • 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teenagers (Level 2 Certificate in Personal Effectiveness)
  • communication skills
  • office skills
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Access advanced training
  • ECDL
  • first aid in the workplace
  • workplace fire safety training
  • manual handling
  • risks and hazards at work (Level 1 BSC Health and Safety)
  • day release in construction trades
  • a range of confidence and team building activities

How do I apply?

To apply, please fill out the application form as fully as possible and in your own writing. You can post it or drop it into the Advance to Work office. If you need help filling in the application form, please contact us.

Advance Plus

If you are aged 20 or over, out of work, and finding it hard to get a job or need more experience under your belt in one of our specific fields, the answer is 'yes'. Advance Plus can only accept 12 people on each scheme, so we will be looking for motivation and the ability to demonstrate a real commitment to seeking work when we select participants. 

As an Advance Plus trainee, you will gain?

  • a personal mentor to support you throughout your time on the scheme  
  • meaningful work experience in an area that interests you
  • skills and training relevant to the specific field and your individual needs  
  • a strengthened CV  
  • the chance to forge a valuable relationship with an employer
  • motivation and focus by having a productive daily routine

When can I start?

Our next schemes April (Introduction to Administration, Finance and Accounts). You can download an application form for these schemes by clicking on this link 'application form'

If you want to apply for a future scheme, you can download and complete the expression of interest form by clicking here. We'll then contact you before we run the next scheme.

Will I be paid?

You won't be paid a wage during your time on the scheme but you may be eligible to receive Income Support through the Social Security Department. If you already receive Income Support, this will continue in the same way and attendance at the Advance Plus scheme will be in place of your usual weekly reporting to Work Zone. Your mentor will discuss this further with you during your interview. 

What type of training will I receive?

Training is an integral part of Advance Plus, delivered by a range of training providers. Mentors arrange appropriate training tailored to each vocational scheme. Advance Plus training is extensive - in the table below you'll see what an 8 week course would typically include.

 

A typical 8 week course would include: 

Week 1 

  • induction to the scheme
  • team building activities
  • personality profiling
  • general skill level assessments
  • CV writing and interview skills workshops
  • mock interview
  • First Aid in the Workplace
  • Fire Safety  courses 

Week 2 

  • intensive vocational training 

Weeks 3 - 7 

  • 4 days a week, for 5 weeks, will be spent in a work placement in a relevant setting
  • 1 day a week will be used for additional vocational training, and for developing employability skills, focusing on areas in order to gain paid employment

Week 8 

  • intensive job hunting week with mentor assistance and further training
